BAMS
The Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is an undergraduate degree focused on the study of Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. This course integrates the principles of Ayurveda with modern medical science, offering a holistic approach to health and wellness.
The BAMS course typically spans 5.5 years, which includes 4.5 years of academic study and a 1-year compulsory internship. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including Ayurvedic principles, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, surgery, gynecology, and internal medicine — all taught with a blend of classical Ayurvedic knowledge and modern scientific understanding.
Students are trained in herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle management, Panchakarma (detoxification therapies), and preventive healthcare. The course also emphasizes natural healing methods and patient-centered care.
Admission to BAMS programs is usually through entrance exams like NEET in India. After graduation, BAMS degree holders can work as Ayurvedic doctors, open private clinics, or join Ayurvedic hospitals and wellness centers. They can also pursue postgraduate studies (MD in Ayurveda) or research.
BAMS offers a rewarding career path for those interested in traditional medicine, natural healing, and promoting holistic health in a growing field of alternative medicine.
